Direction
Velvet has a nap. Cut one panel against the others and the same dye reads as two different colours.

Pressure
It cannot be pressed flat without crushing the pile. Seams are steamed over a needle board, never ironed.

Nothing else absorbs and returns light the same way. On a body in low light, velvet reads as depth rather than colour.
